New Zealand’s healthcare system is using new technology to improve how they take care of people.

  • New Zealand’s healthcare is combining computer systems into stronger, fewer platforms and moving to cloud-based services to make healthcare better.
  • The Whatu Ora makes cybersecurity and data management better by organizing data and using the National Data Platform.
  • The government is spending money on AI and genomics to make the health system work better and find diseases earlier.

New Zealand’s health system, led by Te Whatu Ora and Health Minister Dr.Shane Reti has a plan to make data and technology better and easier to use in New Zealand. This is a big move to change the country’s healthcare system. By working on long-standing problems, this effort will make it easier to create better ways of treating people.

The health industry has over 4,000 old and outdated clinical and business system applications that need to be replaced. The problem of having 28 different settings is causing problems. It’s causing a lack of coordination, varying quality of systems, and more technical problems. This is putting the service and data security at risk.

In response, Te Whatu Ora has focused on combining ICT systems into stronger and fewer platforms. This action wants to stop the fast growth of ICT systems and move towards using safer and more long-lasting solutions. This plan involves moving local computer systems to cloud-based services to save money, and improving the reliability, availability, and security of the services.

Protecting against online threats and combining information

Te Whatu Ora is focusing on addressing cybersecurity worries and improving how data is combined. The agency is trying to make sure that all the data collected across the country follows the same rules and is managed in the same way to reduce the chances of information being accessed or used in a harmful way. A big step was giving Accenture a contract to put together the National Data Platform for all health system information. Plans are being made to create a national patient information system that will help patients, doctors, and health providers.

These actions will help protect against data leaks and make it easy to share and use information in the health industry, improving the quality of care.

Improving technology skills for future healthcare models

Looking ahead, Te Whatu Ora is dedicated to improving its technology to help bring healthcare services to people’s homes. This plan follows the goals set out in the interim Te Pae Tata New Zealand Health Plan 2022, which focuses on using digital tools and services, like Hira, New Zealand’s health information platform, and expanding virtual after-hours and telehealth services, especially in rural areas.

The government spent almost a billion dollars since 2021 to improve the health system’s computer and digital network. This shows how important it is to keep up with new technology and protect against digital dangers. The Ministry of Health realizes that we need to keep working to make the health system better at using new technologies like AI and genomics. This will help make care delivery more efficient, save money, and make sure we can keep providing care for a long time.

New Zealand’s health system is about to change a lot. They want to make their computer systems work more smoothly, keep their information safe, and use new technology to give better care. The plan will make healthcare better by fixing problems in the system and getting ready for the future.
